Darkly Dreaming Dexter

I read this book for one of my book groups. A nice book for the time of season. I seen some of the shows of Dexter and I just wanted to read more on him. He is a different sort of chap. Loves the idea that his Dark Passenger wants to get rid of the bad things in life. Never knowing what the history of himself was, it was hard for Dexter to understand why he was doing what he did. But with the guidance of his adoptive dad his actions were put in focus. His he a monster?

Dexter is a blood specialist. An ideal career choice for his Dark Passenger. We all have dreams Dex says. Does his actions count in sleep? Weren't we all crazy in our sleep? What was sleep a process that we dump our insanity into a dark subconscious pit and come out on the other side ready to eat cereal instead of the neighbor's children?
Who can argue with that LOL!

Characters that I liked the most were Dexter of course. His girlfriend Rita. Even though she had problems of her own there was some kind of connection that the two of them had. Some of the cops at the prescient that Dexter worked at, I even like a tidbit of, Doakes the Sgt that got on Dex's nerves.
His sister Deb was ok but at times I couldn't stand her. For a cop she was very sloppy in her work. Made her look like a cop that shouldn't be.
I liked his adoptive father, Harry, he understood Dex, he tried to keep him focused on what the importance of who to be a monster to.
The most hated character was LaGuerta. She was a ignorant person and a cop that thought she was too good for what she did.

I thought the ending was a surprise. But I thought it to be a bit on the light side. I thought the police work was written sloppy. It made the Miami police look like they were rookies.

I said before I watched some of the shows for Dexter. They are based on Darkly Dreaming Dexter. Alot of what is in the show is put in and not true to the book. Sadly this is done quite a bit. Did that make me enjoy Darkly Dreaming Dexter less? No it did not. I still would like to read the two books that follow. How can I not read more on this lovable monster. LOL!

This is a bookcrossing book. And I am sending it on it's way to NJ as a surprise

I give Darkly Dreaming Dexter 4

I've got this on Mt. TBR; I'm anxious to read it 'cause I've heard so much about it.

Okay, I so love your little "Amazon says...blah, blah, blah..."

Too cute.

About Dexter, I hear the second book is better than the first. When it comes out on audio at the library, I'll pick it up.
